Ident research

The Legendary Pictures ident is typically used for the thriller genre.  It's an American media company based in Burbank, California.  The ident is twisted and intertwined,this creates the feeling of mystery which is a theme used in thriller films. Also the low key lighting links to thriller film because thrillers usually have this type of lighting (gloomy and dark).
The Universal ident is typically used for the adventure genre. the fact that there a globe on the logo suggests travel . Also the colours are very bright so the logo stands out, the colours signify that the polls of films made by them are happy endings . This logo completely contrasts to the one above . The lighting has a big effect on the mood/tone. The lighting around the world helps to brighten the whole theme of the ident.

In the extract one of the locations is the underground station. Its very deserted , there is absolutely none around . When the trains come past there is a very loud diegetic sound of the train juxtaposes the silence in the blue lit room where her deceased husband lies. The sound also echoes this links to the theme of weather its dream or reality.  Another sound heard by the audience when she is in the underground is distorted noises. Personally I think these noises represent her mind and how confused she is about the whole situation . When someone dies who's close to you its extremely hard to process that it has actually happened.   Through out the whole extract of Flightplan the lighting is very low key . After the titles when we see the first shot, the lighting is very low key. This helps set the mood for the film because the low key lighting means we can't identify the object untill later in in the shot. The object is revealed to be a dim lit light bulb, this reflects the feeling of uncertainty in the audiences mind. Also becasue the lighing is low key in the shot of the bulb it gives the extract good coninuity as the darness at the start carries on. At the beginning of the extract the titles fade in and out , this is very effective because it fits very well together with the  non- diegetic soundtrack played. The way the titles fade in help to show the main theme of the movie. After watching the title sequence the audience gets a feeling of uncertainty. The non diegetic music we hear at the start when the titles are being shown really helps to set the scene and gives us an idea of what themes the film might be based on. How the genre has developed over time. The first thriller films were directed by a man called Alfred Hitchcock in the 1920s and 30s. His third silent thriller was called 'The Lodger' and he released it in 1926 . After this in 1929 he released the first thriller film with sound in Britain , so this was a big step forward, it was called Blackmail. At this time there was also a few other directors producing such as George A Cooper and Michael Powell. In 1940 Hitchcock continued to direct more thriller films. He released Foreign Correspondent and Rebecca which went on winning an Oscar. In 1944 George Cukor released two psychological thrillers , Film Noir (murder investigation) and Gaslight ( husband making wife go insane). During the 1950s Hitchcock was at the height of his career directing a few more thrillers making him become a huge success.
