Detailed Planning: Location In the park scenes we will have high key, natural daylight. This reflects happiness and innocence , it connotes positive feelings. The shrine and scenes where she is tied up with be the opposite to the park scenes. The lighting will be low key and artificial to connote the negative mood of the scenes. It reflects Imogen's vulnerability and the evil act that the kidnapper is doing.

Initial Ident Ideas

We chose the name of Psyco Logical from thriving about words that link with the thriller genre. The two main themes of thrillers that we thought of were Psychological and Puzzle, we think that through our ident we have shown these themes. The picture of the side profile will fade in from a black screen, the cogs in the brain will the begin to turn. Meanwhile the name of the ident appears around the moving image. Then everything fades out to reveal a black screen again. The fact that the word 'psychological' is separated add to the effect. It makes the audience have to think  even before the film sequence starts. We chose the word 'uncertain' because it links to themes such as mystery which is a common thriller convention. The word also helps to create a mood and feeling of fear. Because of how we designed the ident its gets the viewer asking questions. They wonder what they need to be uncertain about , it sets a tone for the rest of the movie. The sho

Shooting script

This was our feedback. we have taken into account the facts that some one said the there may be 'too few shots', we agree with this and when it comes to our real shooting script we will develop the plot further to try and fill the time gap. Someone also commented 'how long will the shot last for ?' ,we actually forgot about this and again will be adding it to the final draft. One person said that the plot comes across slightly confusing. This is deliberate because we wanted a non-chronological order for the title sequence. Its a convention that helps to raise questions in the audience.

Pitch Feedback

Strengths: Origional Plot and Plot twist Detailed/intresting Storyline, very effective Very relatable Good use of lighting Fits the genre well Provokes questions Weaknesses: Will it be hard to find a setting ?- we are going to do lots of close ups in the opening sequence so the location doesnt matter so much. Might be too much to fit in an opening sequence- we arent doing the whole plot in the opening. Make sure you dont give too much away in the opening. How will you show the police- the police bit isnt in the opening sequence.

Survey Results

Image
The most common age of a person that took the survey was 15 to 19 years old , then 20+ then 16 to 14. More females than males took the survey. It was quite close but it seem that yes people would perfer to have strory put in non chronological order , it is a typical thriller convention. The most popular themes from our survey are Plot twist and Mystery!  People said characteristics such as bravery, strong , courage , protective and determined. The surveyers said films like Taken,Psyco and Limitless.

The Legendary Pictures ident is typically used for the thriller genre.  It's  an American m edia company  based in Burbank , C alifornia.  The ident is twisted and intertwined, this creates the feeling of mystery which is a theme used in thriller films. Also the low key lighting links to thriller film because thrillers usually have this type of lighting (gloomy and dark). The Universal ident is typically used for the adventure genre. the fact that there a globe on the logo suggests travel . Also the colours are very bright so the logo stands out, the colours signify that the polls of films made by them are happy endings . This logo completely contrasts to the one above . The lighting has a big effect on the mood/tone. The lighting around the world helps to brighten the whole theme of the ident.

9 frame analysis (Oldboy)

Image
The main themes I picked out from the extract were non chronological and secrecy. I didn't like this title sequence as much as Shutter Island . I think its because the film plot starts before all of the titles have finished. I like to see a plain background and some noises to set the scene and raise questions at the start.

9 frame analysis (Shutter Island)

Image
https://vimeo.com/23211894 I think the main themes of this film are the unknown and sea.  I really like the way this title sequence has been constructed because I think simple is best . Having too much going on in the title sequence can distract the audience from what you want them to focus on.

The themes are mystery and uncertainty and I do like the was this title sequence has been put together.

Inner Workings

Inner workings Some title sequences reveal some of the themes and genres of the film whereas others don't as much. The types of title sequences are Graphic animation,Nostalgic influence, Situtational type and Photomontage. Title sequences can be one specific type or a combination of the above. These sequences are used to make the audience question and to set the mood/tone of the film. We could apply inner workings to our piece to help show the themes of our product through the title sequence and to really grab the audiences attention from the start.

Sixth Sense Analysis

Image
After the titles when we see the first shot, the lighting is very low key. This helps set the mood for the film because the low key lighting means we can't identify the object untill later in in the shot. The object is revealed to be a dim lit light bulb, this reflects the feeling of uncertainty in the audiences mind. Also becasue the lighing is low key in the shot of the bulb it gives the extract good coninuity as the darness at the start carries on. At the beginning of the extract the titles fade in and out , this is very effective because it fits very well together with the  non- diegetic soundtrack played. The way the titles fade in help to show the main theme of the movie. After watching the title sequence the audience gets a feeling of uncertainty. The non diegetic music we hear at the start when the titles are being shown really helps to set the scene and gives us an idea of what themes the film might be based on. The use of this sound track is effective as it grabs the

Flightplan analysis

Image
In the extract one of the locations is the underground station. Its very deserted , there is absolutely none around . When the trains come past there is a very loud diegetic sound of the train juxtaposes the silence in the blue lit room where her deceased husband lies. The sound also echoes this links to the theme of weather its dream or reality.  Another sound heard by the audience when she is in the underground is distorted noises. Personally I think these noises represent her mind and how confused she is about the whole situation . When someone dies who's close to you its extremely hard to process that it has actually happened.   Through out the whole extract of Flightplan the lighting is very low key . This convention is regularly used in thrillers because it reflects and helps to create the mood/tone. In the morgue the lighting is low but blue, this colour is also the theme of the child's room later on in the clip. This is hinting to the audience that the death of the

Limitless analysis.

Image
LIMITLESS In the clip low key lighting is used to create the feeling of danger. It reflects the dangerous situation and creates the mood. the man standing on the edge of the building is well dressed in a suit and has a high class apartment this suggests to the audience that her is a professional man. The use of a tracking shot going up the skyscraper, shows and emphasises the height of the building, this helps builds up the tension in the film. There is also a few close ups of the mans face stood on the building, close ups usually  emphasise the emotion that character is feeling. In this case it allows the viewer to see the  determination in the characters face. When the titles are shown at the start , you hear non diegetic banging noises. It's very effective because it intrigues the audience so they carry on watching to find out what the banging noise is. You hear a diegetic sound of a chainsaw when the unknown person is trying to get through the door. Here the audience unders

Genre Research

How the genre has developed over time. The first thriller films were directed by a man called Alfred Hitchcock in the 1920s and 30s. His third silent thriller was called 'The Lodger' and he released it in 1926 . After this in 1929 he released the first thriller film with sound in Britain , so this was a big step forward, it was called Blackmail. At this time there was also a few other directors producing such as George A Cooper and Michael Powell. In 1940 Hitchcock continued to direct more thriller films. He released Foreign Correspondent and Rebecca which went on winning an Oscar. In 1944 George Cukor released two psychological thrillers , Film Noir (murder investigation) and Gaslight ( husband making wife go insane). During the 1950s Hitchcock was at the height of his career directing a few more thrillers making him become a huge success. He was creating films like To catch a thief (1955) and Strangers on a train (1951) .Whilst he was becoming a success directors like Cha

SubGenres and Hybrids

Image
A genre is the term for a category of films, literature ,art or culture. In films its genre is determined by the elements from which the film is constructed. A sub-genre/hybrid is a subcategory within a certain main genre. Examples of Thriller Hybrids: Comedy -Thriller, Romantic-Thriller, Sci-fi-Thriller, Action-Thriller, Adventure-Thriller, Non fiction-Thriller. Some examples are: In a comedy thriller you would expect it to be scary but also funny at parts the film could come across as a bit sarcastic and jokey. During a Romantic thriller you would expect there to be for example a relationship torn apart or someone loved dying. In an action thriller you might see a chase and/or some shooting of guns.
For my main task i will be working with Rosey , James and Liv. I chose to work with them because we all worked together in the preliminary task and we were able to produce a good standard product .
My initial response to the task is that I think that it will be better than the preliminary as we have had practice. I am excited to do my first piece that will actually count.

An explanation of what the main task is .

The task is to create the titles and opening of a new thriller fiction film, to last a maximum of two minutes. All video and audio material must be original produced by you , with the exception of music or audio-effects from a copyright-free source.
http://megforemanaspreliminary.blogspot.co.uk In this preliminary task we did a continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door , crossing a room and sitting down on a chair opposite another character. We had to  demonstrate match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. I did the preliminary task so that I was prepared for the main task. It allowed me to learn some basic key techniques that I may well go on to use in my main task. It also gave me room to make mistakes.
