Flightplan analysis

In the extract one of the locations is the underground station. Its very deserted , there is absolutely none around . When the trains come past there is a very loud diegetic sound of the train juxtaposes the silence in the blue lit room where her deceased husband lies. The sound also echoes this links to the theme of weather its dream or reality.  Another sound heard by the audience when she is in the underground is distorted noises. Personally I think these noises represent her mind and how confused she is about the whole situation . When someone dies who's close to you its extremely hard to process that it has actually happened.

Through out the whole extract of Flightplan the lighting is very low key . This convention is regularly used in thrillers because it reflects and helps to create the mood/tone. In the morgue the lighting is low but blue, this colour is also the theme of the child's room later on in the clip. This is hinting to the audience that the death of the husband /dad means something or is in fact leading /trying to tell the family something. Its suggesting that something else is going on underneath this tragedy.

Editing has been used to play around with the time in the film , its not in chronological order. the editor has used flash backs to create this . Its very effective because it makes the audience question which bits are reality and which aren't. Also the film is set in a foreign country (Germany) and there are subtitles .This adds to the whole feeling of uncertainty because when your in another country you aren't usually in your comfort zone. We can clearly pick out that the woman doesn't feel safe . This is shown again when she insists that she should sleep in the same room as her daughter, she feels the need to protect her child.

There is high angle shot looking down over the woman. this represents the woman as being helpless and weak just like in stereotypes. It also shows her as being alone because its in a dark street and its quite a wide angle so we can clearly see that the location is deserted. When she look out of the child's bedroom window the first time she see two men looking , when she looks a second time the have disappeared. As she leaves the room  and walks through her house there is a panning/tracking shot following her. It suggests that she is being watched.

The main themes that stand out in this extract for me are Death , Uncertainty and Loneliness.

Similarities and differences to Limitless:

Similarities
Differences
·      We see the character before we know their identity. In Limitless we hear his voice 1st and in this we see her back.
·      The titles at the start are similar as we can see hardly anything and there is the noise of a train.
·      The location is a lot more deserted than in limitless. Limitless is in a busy city where as here its in the underground, morgue and a dark street.
·      Also this plot is about a family who’s dad/husband has passed away.
