Sixth Sense Analysis

After the titles when we see the first shot, the lighting is very low key. This helps set the mood for the film because the low key lighting means we can't identify the object untill later in in the shot. The object is revealed to be a dim lit light bulb, this reflects the feeling of uncertainty in the audiences mind. Also becasue the lighing is low key in the shot of the bulb it gives the extract good coninuity as the darness at the start carries on.

At the beginning of the extract the titles fade in and out , this is very effective because it fits very well together with the  non- diegetic soundtrack played. The way the titles fade in help to show the main theme of the movie. After watching the title sequence the audience gets a feeling of uncertainty.

The non diegetic music we hear at the start when the titles are being shown really helps to set the scene and gives us an idea of what themes the film might be based on. The use of this sound track is effective as it grabs the audiences attention because they want to find out what in the plot makes the mood like this. After the light bulb is revealed we hear the diegetic sounds of a door opening and footsteps. When the audience finally see the character we see that she is a woman in a dress and we presume that she is not of the lower class.

There is a close up when the woman is revealed and it looks like the camera is positioned on a shelf in the basement. The positioning of the camera could suggest that someone is watching her. This is a common convention used in thriller films to again add to the feeling of uncertainty. Shortly after that there is a wide shot showing the whole of the room with her in it , it emphasises the fact that she is alone in the cellar. She also shivers , thriller are not usually set in warm locations so this fits the genre very well.

The main theme of this extract so far is mystery because there are several factors that would suggest this such as an unknown character when all we can hear is footsteps.

The title sequence is very similar to Limitless because we can see absolutely nothing. Its also different because in Limitless there is a diegetic banging noise whereas here its a non diegetic soundtrack.

I analysed the first 3:48 minutes of the YouTube clip.
